Wilgowrah History

The history of Wilgowrah dates back to the early 1800’s when explorer, William Lawson, set out to traverse the Blue Mountains alongside Gregory Blaxland and William Wentworth.

After discovering and following the Cudgegong River, Lawson found his way to Mudgee where he began taking up large tracts of land including establishing what is now known as Wilgowrah.

Today, the 480 acre property is owned by Mudgee farmers, Rick and Steph Gordon, who produce prime grass-fed beef and hay using sustainable farming practices as well as tend to Gawthorne’s Hut, Tom’s Cottage and Wilgowrah Church.

Gawthorne's Hut Testimonials

‘Gawthorne’s Hut is such a beautiful place to stay, with luxurious finishings, amazing views and absolute peace and quiet; we didn’t want to leave and wish we would have booked a couple of extra nights! This is a quality property that you really won’t regret booking. Rick and Steph are great hosts and we really enjoyed our goody basket and delicious farm fresh eggs. We can’t wait to come back!’

Melissa

‘Quite simply – this was one of the greatest weekend experiences of our life. Steph and Rick are hosts that went above and beyond, stunning architecture and interior and the perfect balance between luxury and too ostentatious. We will definitely be back!!!’

James

‘What a glorious spot! We absolutely loved every minute spent at this beautiful dwelling, drinking in a superb country setting. No expense has been spared on the amenities and produce supplied either. It was utterly relaxing and we will be back! Huge thank you to wonderful hosts, Rick and Steph!’

Kate

‘Gawthorne’s Hut is a seriously impressive and unique accommodation with a spectacular outlook over rolling hills. The stylish and unique accommodation was very comfortable with the large glass walls drawing in the relaxing landscape. Even the shower and bathtub has a killer view. Loved the contemporary features in the compact kitchen with the outdoor BBQ and kitchen hobs more than adequate for our stay. Key feature of the property is its setting overlooking the farmland and rolling hills, and what better way to take it all in than sitting around the large fire pit.’

Shannon

‘The accommodation was absolutely amazing to stay in. The photos did not do the place justice and it exceeded our expectations. We were welcomed with a complimentary basket the incorporated the finest local foods from around Mudgee. The space was clean, tidy, architecturally well thought out and user-friendly with modern technology. Waking up in the morning and overlooking the mountains through the clear windows was a sight that you could never get sick of. Great space and definitely recommend for an escape!’

Tom's Cottage Testimonials

‘Staying at Tom’s Cottage was a dream. It was our wedding anniversary and Rick and Steph made our stay so memorable. The accommodation is amazing and we can’t wait to stay again. The farm is beautiful and the hill sunset tour by Rick and Steph was incredibly special. A truly fantastic destination.’

Leonie

‘Tom’s Cottage is one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed at. The cottage is generously sized, with modern features and amenities and amazing views. The location is great, with a short drive to the town centre and wineries. Rick and Steph were wonderful hosts, and the sunset tour in the buggy was a great experience! Would definitely recommend, and can’t wait to be back!

Alesha

‘Beautiful place – stunning views of the fields and stars at night. Loved lounging on the deck reading our books & taking the buggy to sunset hill. Lots of thoughtful touches- the biscotti, milk and eggs were much appreciated! P.s love to Birch the dog.’

John

‘This a fantastic spot just on the outskirts of Mudgee. You feel like it is a true country escape with all the convenience of being minutes from everything. Rick and Steph are really hospitable and they go above and beyond. Also, if you like cycling, there are amazing car-free back road gravel routes just a few Kms from your door. The property is spotless and it is very well designed and landscaped. We watched the sunset, listened to the bees around the cherry blossom, lit a fire and woke up to an amazing view. We loved it!’

Andrew

‘Tom’s Cottage would be one of the best Airbnb experiences we have had. Rick and Steph were superb hosts and the cottage itself was charming, but with all the modern conveniences, sparkling clean and with a beautiful outlook across the countryside. The extra touches, including the buggy ride to the top of the hill at sunset, made our stay both special and memorable. Can’t recommend this place highly enough and we will certainly be back.’
